Upon the deposition of his predecessor and uncle Abdul Aziz, Murad V ruled from 30 May to 31 August 1876, when he was himself deposed on the grounds of mental illness in favor of his younger brother, Abdul Hamid II (31 August 1876-27 April 1909).
