Intriguing Die Erasure

427, Lot: 83. Estimate $200.
Sold for $320. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.27 g, 12h). Sardes mint. Struck under Menander, circa 324/3 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field, rose below throne. Price 2553; ADM I Series IX. EF, underlying luster, die erasure mark in right field. Well centered.

The erasure mark in the right field of the reverse is intriguing. The shape of the erasure suggests that it removed the club symbol--perhaps this die was originally used to strike coins of Price 2550, and then the club was removed, and the rose added?
