ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 408/7-404 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23mm, 14.55 g, 12h). Head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose in profile, with bud to right; to left, sphinx seated left; all within incuse square. Hecatomnus 34b (A23/P29 – this coin[?]); Bérend, Tétradrachmes 27–8 (same obv. die); Ashton 4; HGC 6, 1417. Near VF, toned, granular surfaces, flat strike in centers. Very rare issue, only 16 examples noted by Ashton (Hecatomnus).

Hecatomnus 34b is not illustrated, but is listed as being 14.55 grams, 12h die axis, and noted as “worn” -- characteristics that fit the present coin perfectly. That coin was seen in commerce at Baldwin’s in 1971, and the present coin has an authentic old tone and was in commerce in the same country recently.
