ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Æ Fals (18mm, 2.01 g, 12h). ‘Standing Caliph’ coinage. Tanukh mint. Struck circa 690s. Caliph standing facing, holding sword / Transformed cross set on three steps; bi-tanukh to left, wāf to right. SICA I, 656 var. (field inscriptions on rev. switched); DOCAB 129; Walker p. 41, P10; Album 3531. VF, earthen black patina. Rare.

From Album (p. 37): “This mint name probably refers to the tribe, the Banu Tanukh, rather than a physical location. Walker and others previously misread it as Saruj, a city near Harran, but this name would be epigraphically impossible for these coins.”
