OCTAVIAN. 32-31 BC. AV Aureus (7.64 gm). Italian (Rome?) mint. Bare head right / Equestrian statue of Octavian galloping left, his right hand extended. RIC I 262; CRI 394; Bahrfeldt 104; Cohen 73. Toned VF, several small surface marks. Rare. ($3000)
This type was among Octavian's last issues before Actium, likely struck to fulfill needs in anticipation of the inevitable confrontation with Antony. This issue was also Octavian's counterpart to Antony's legionary series.
