KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (16mm, 4.25 g, 12h). Sardes mint. Struck under Menander, circa 324/3 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; bee in left field; below throne, monogram above three pellets. Price 2563 var. (no pellets); ADM I Series X var. (unlisted variety); CNG E-429, lot 45 (same dies). Good VF, a couple minor flan flaws. One of two known.


Interestingly, these pieces are also obverse die linked to BM RPK,p83G.51.AleIII (in Pella) and G. Hirsch 261, lot 228, which are the only two examples of this Price 2563 where Zeus’ legs are crossed.
