Sold for $1000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Anonymous. 209 BC. AR Victoriatus (19mm, 3.00 g, 12h). Pentagram (first) series. Mint in central Italy. Laureate head of Jupiter right / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; pentagram between. Crawford 105/1; Sydenham 233a; RSC 24l; Type as RBW 470 (same rev. die). Near VF, toned, minor deposits. Very rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Roma Numismatics (retail), 2008.

Very rare silver type; the pentagram victoriatus type is die linked to the victoriatus with staff issue (Vatican 255 pentagram and 337 staff share obverses). There have been just three examples in modern commerce (JD and RBW collections, and one at Gorny) in addition to this McCabe example! [Andrew McCabe]
