Anonymous. 208 BC. Æ As (34.5mm, 41.28 g, 5h). Staff and club series. Mint in Etruria(?). Laureate head of bearded Janus; I (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; I (mark of value) above. Crawford 106/4 var. (horizontal staff on rev.); Sydenham 210 var. (same); Type as RBW 478; McCabe Group E. Good Fine, dark brown patina with touches of green. Rare variety.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Numismatica Ars Classica, 2011.

This apparently anonymous as is part of the staff and club series, see McCabe, Essays Russo, Group E, which proves the link to RRC 106. This anonymous element of RRC 106 always comes with concave reverses – due to being struck with convex dies, not due to flan production – and very high relief obverses. [Andrew McCabe]
