The Triumvirs. Mark Antony. Autumn 32-spring 31 BC. AR Denarius (17.5mm, 3.56 g, 6h). Legionary issue. Patrae(?) mint. Praetorian galley right / Aquila between two signa; LEG XXIII across lower field. Crawford 544/39; CRI 383; Sydenham 1246; RSC 60; RBW –. Good VF, lightly toned, weakly struck in a few areas. Rare.
From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Roma XIII (23 March 2017), lot 695.
The highest numbered legion; supposedly higher numbers are either modern-era alterations, or possibly, die engraving errors. [Andrew McCabe]
