GEPIDS. In the name of Anastasius I. 491-504 AD. AR Quarter Siliqua (0.38 gm). Sirmium mint. Crude diademed bust of Anastasius right / Crude monogram in wreath. Stefan -; Demo -. Good VF for type. Rare. ($300)

The Gepids were a small Gothic tribe occupying territory along the northern Adriatic. Their territory was absorbed by the Ostrogoths under Theodoric in 504 AD. Brunsmid and Stefan identifed crude silver fractional siliquae struck in the name of Anastasius as issues of the Gepids. Later issues in the name of Justin I and Justinian I were struck by the Ostrogoths at Sirmium. This variety, with the name of Anastasius and no reverse legend, is not listed in Brunsmid and Stefan, nor in Demo's recent catalogue.
