The A.K. COLLECTION

The A.K. Collection of the coins of the Roman Empire was carefully assembled with a great deal of thought and commitment over a period of several decades. The present selection – there are no duplicates in the Imperial coinage - consists of 553 silver and bronze pieces, primarily from the reigns of Gordian III, Philip I, Trajan Decius, Trebonianus Gallus and Aemilian, along with their wives Tranquillina, Otacilia Severa and Herennia Etruscilla, as well as their sons Philip II, Herennius Etruscus, Hostilian and Volusian: it also includes both Provincial and Imperial issues. Nevertheless, among the provincial are some Severan pieces, and within the lot of Unusual and Irregular coins there also some pieces of Antoninus Pius, Septimius Severus, Caracalla, Geta, Elagabalus, Severus Alexander and Julia Mamaea. The coins have been divided into 12 lots.

The quality of the coins ranges from Fine to Extremely fine. This interesting collection includes some very rare coins as well as pieces from important collections like those of Dattari, Naegeli, Niggeler, Rosen, Steger, Stöcklin, Voirol and Weder. In addition, most of the coins are provenanced from auctions or lists, or were bought directly from stock of dealers such as Münzhandlung Basel; Münzen und Medaillen AG, Basel; Dr. W. Wruck and Dr. Habelt, Berlin; H. Pilartz, Cologne; Frankfurter Münzhandlung E. Button, later Schweizerischer Bankverein and B. Peus, Frankfurt; H.P.R. Frey and H. Blaser-Frey, Freiburg; Lanz, Graz; Athena, E. Beckenbauer, G. Hirsch, Graf Klenau, Münchner Münzhandlung K. Kress and Lanz, Munich; E. Bourgey, Maison Florange, Maison Platt and J. Vinchon, Paris; I. Ernst-Algie and H.H. Kricheldorf, Stuttgart; G. Bernardi, Trieste; H.D. Rauch, Vienna; Bank Leu and F. Sternberg, Zurich.

A separate, fully illustrated catalogue of the complete collection has been compiled, containing the photos and full description of all the coins in each lot. This catalogue will be available during the Triton lot viewing at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York, but you may also request that a catalogue be sent to you.
