435, Lot: 108. Estimate $300.
Sold for $240. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

PAMPHYLIA, Aspendos. Circa 465-430 BC. AR Stater (23mm, 11.06 g, 12h). Warrior advancing right, holding shield and spear / Triskeles; EΣT above; below, lion at bay left; all within incuse square. SNG BN 13 (same dies). VF, struck from worn dies, overstruck on a tetradrachm of Samos (cf. HGC 6, 1189).

Struck from the same reverse die as the preceding and following lots. An interesting example of weight reduction, where a stater is overstruck on a tetradrachm that theoretically weighed two grams heavier. There is one spot along the edge where a small amount of metal may have been removed to lower the tetradrachm weight before restriking.
