SPAIN. Æ As (23mm, 12.79 g, 8h). Countermark applied during reign of Claudius, AD 41-54(?). I•S within rectangular stamp, struck on an as of Gaius (Caligula) from Segobriga. ACIP c/m 15; RPC I p. 810, 52. Host Fine, c/m Near VF, green patina.

From the Richard Baker Collection.

This countermark may be related to the shortages of small change that followed the closing of the Spanish provincial mints during the reign of Caligula. For discussion, see: Almargo-Gorbea, Martin, “Nuevo ejemplo de contramarca I.S. sobre un as de Segobriga,” in Boletín del Seminario de Estudios de Arte y Arrqueología de Valladolid 43 (1977), 99-108.
