ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECK/ GEORGE THE FOURTH PATRON, bare head left; 1824 below / LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP, three men in lifeboat right, two rowing, one pulling a fourth from the water. Eimer 1174; BHM 1246. VF, toned, numerous marks, clasp removed. Rare in silver.


The artist, W. Wyon, has placed himself in the scene as the man in the boat, pulling a survivor from the water. This medal was awarded in gold and silver to individuals who performed acts of heroism in rescuing shipwrecked sailors along the coast of England.
