Sold for $170. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Anonymous. Circa 217-215 BC. Æ Sextans (28.5mm, 19.45 g, 4h). Semilibral prow series. Rome mint. Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus; • • (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; • • (mark of value) below. Crawford 38/5; Sydenham 85; Type as RBW 96-7. VF, attractive green patina with touches of reddish brown, some roughness.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Spink (ex a collection of early Roman bronzes formed before 2010 from sources outside Italy).

For this sextans and the following uncia, see the note under the RRC 35/6 uncia discussing the timing of these issues, which may in my view be 225-215 BC, rather than 217-215 BC. Cf. NAC 92, lots 1524-1527 for a range of styles of this large issue. [Andrew McCabe]
