ANGLO-SAXON. Continental. Circa 710-720 AD. AR Sceatta (Penny) (1.16 gm). Series G. Quentovic in Neustria mint? Diademed bust right; [ I before / "Standard" with crosses and annulet. Cf. Metcalf II 267; SCBC 808. Good VF. Rare and important. ($1500)

Site finds place the origin of Series G in northern France, with Quentovic suggested as a likely mint. This fine style unrecorded variety of a Series G sceatta has (inverted A)[ I in place of the usual cross before of the bust. Could this be a memory of the mint name found on 7th century Merovingian tremisses from Quentovic-VVICVS FIT? This coin may be the earliest example of an Anglo-Saxon sceatta from Quentovic.
