ANGLO-SAXON. Thames region. Circa 710-720 AD. AR Sceatta (Penny) (0.95 gm). Series N. London mint? Two standing facing figures, holding long staffs, cross between / K ] SS, (SS retrograde) bar above. Cf. Metcalf III 372 for obverse; SCBC -. Good VF. Unique unrecorded type. ($2000)
The reverse type, with its indecipherable legend, has no parallels in the Anglo-Saxon series, although the letter forms are somewhat similar to the C ARIP eclectic series found in south-east England (cf. Metcalf III pg. 419). Series C ARIP and N circulated concurrently and this coin shows affinities with each series.
