ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Offa. 757-796. AR Penny (16.5mm, 1.21 g, 9h). Light coinage, portrait type. London mint; Duda, moneyer. Struck circa 785-792/3. Draped bust right; ornamental spray below / + D V D on four lobes divided by four jewel-like lobes; the inner circle contains a cross botonnée with four petals in saltire.. Cf. Chick 19; Naismith, Coinage 10 = EMC 2008.0245 (this coin); SCBI –; cf. North 310; SCBC 905. VF, toned. A unique variety of Chick 19 with the letters of the moneyer’s name in additional lobes.
