BYZANTINE. Bronze reliquary cross. Circa 7th-9th century AD. Height, including hanger 3 3/4 inches (95mm). Nimbate figure of the crucified Christ, arms supported by two busts, two more above and below / Nimbate figure of the Virgin Mary, orans, surrounded by four busts. Attached cylindrical hanger. Nice middle Byzantine provincial style with a jade green patina. This reliquary cross, intended to hold the relic of a saint or other holy object, is still sealed, the original bronze pin at the base is intact! Choice condition. ($2000)
