SAMARIA, “Middle Levantine” Series. Circa 375-333 BC. AR Twenty-fourth Shekel – Hemiobol (8mm, 0.26 g, 10h). Galley right;
1 (in Aramaic) above, waves below / Lion standing right; “U sign” above; all within dotted square border. DCA 802 = CNG E-209, lot 233 (
this coin, attributed to Hierapolis-Bambyke [Manbog] in Cyrrhestica); CNG 108, lot 258 var. (letter on obv.). Fine, toned, slightly weak strike. Extremely rare.
From the Edward E. Cohen Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 209 (22 April 2009), lot 233.
In his recent die study of the silver coinage of Manbog, N. J. Andrade persuasively argues against the prior attribution of this issue to that city, suggesting a more likely placement in Samaria (Andrade p. 25 and n. 83, this coin referenced).
