JUDAEA, Neapolis. Æ (26mm, 13.27 g). Countermark applied early 2nd century AD. Eagle standing facing, head left, wings spread in oval countermark, head left in circular countermark; thunderbolt in rectangular countermark; and head right in rectangular countermark. Howgego 343, 155, 475, and 138(?). Host Fair, c/m’s Fine to Near VF.

From the Richard Baker Collection.

The thunderbolt and eagle countermarks may have been applied for the Legio II Fulminata, but Howgego also suggests that they more likely relate to the cult of Zeus Hypsistos.
