PHOENICIA, Aradus. Macrinus. AD 217-218. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 14.08 g, 12h). Laureate and draped bust right / Eagle standing facing, head and tail right, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; between legs, uncertain object (baetyl or shrine?). Prieur 1247 (
this coin). VF, toned with underlying luster, some minor porosity, graffiti in right obverse field. Extremely rare, only one known to Prieur, and none in CoinArchives.
From the Michel Prieur Collection.
It is possible that Prieur miscatalogued this coin as being from Aradus, as the uncertain symbol between the eagle’s legs does not correlate to anything used at Aradus.
