John III Ducas (Vatatzes). Emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. AR Aspron Trachy Nomisma (33mm, 2.54 g, 6h). Magnesia mint. Three-quarter-length figure of the Virgin Mary, orans, wearing tunic and maphorion / John III on left and St. Theodore on right standing facing, holding between them a sheathed sword, point downward, resting on two shields. Cf. DOC IV 48, pl. XXXIII, 48; cf. SB 2102. Good VF, toned, breaks in flan. Very rare.
