IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hemihekte – Twelfth Stater (7mm, 1.16 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Head of creature (griffin?) left / Incuse squares. Cf. CNG E-428, lot 180 (hekte), otherwise unpublished in the standard references. VF.

It appears that this hemihekte was struck with an obverse die used to strike the larger hekte, which was not an unusual phenomenon among early electrum coinages, though it was not previously known for this type.
