IONIA, Miletos. Late 6th-early 5th century BC. AR Fraction (9mm, 0.61 g). Contemporary imitation. Head of lion facing within pelleted square / Stellate pattern within incuse square. Rosen 586 (
this coin); cf. SNG Kayhan 461 for prototype issue. VF, toned. Very rare.
From the Ealing Collection. Ex Spink Numismatic Circular CVII.7 (September 1999), no. 3147; Jonathan P. Rosen Collection.
While this general type is known at Miletos, the style here is significantly different from the norm, and the weight of this piece does not comport with the Milesian standard at use at the time. Although the Rosen collection placed the coin under Miletos, the attribution was doubted in the text.
