[Rothschild] Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London. Catalogue of the Collection of Greek Coins in Gold, Silver, Electrum and Bronze of a Late Collector. (28 May 1900). 4to. 67 pages, 518 lots; 10 fine autotype plates. Ruled throughout with prices realised and buyers’ names noted in manuscript. Bound in contemporary three quarter black morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, marbled endpapers. From the libraries of Frank Sherman Benson and Joel Malter with their ex-libris on the front pastedown. Fine condition, rubbed and worn at extremities with some loss to the head of the spine, the first free endpaper detached, the contents otherwise clean throughout. A major sale, infrequently offered and especially attractive with both prices and buyers’ names.

Although offered as an anonymous collection, the coins offered in this sale are widely considered to be that of Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild and no doubt contains those coins which were either not required or were duplicates of those already housed in the British Museum, to whom Rothschild’s collection had been bequeathed upon his death in 1898.
