An Important Group of Magnetes Issues

448, Lot: 290. Estimate $300.
Sold for $1900. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Magnetes. Lot of twenty-six (26) bronze issues. A highly interesting group containing some unpublished types. A unique opportunity to acquire the most comprehensive collection of Roman coins from this city. Roughness. Average Fine. Twenty-six (26) coins in lot.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from the collector:
The Roman Provincial issues of the Thessalian Magnetes are a fascinating subject, but also a very challenging one because of the rarity of the individual pieces and the fact that they are almost never found in decent condition. One look at the relevant sections of RPC is enough to indicate how little we know about them and how fragmented is what we do know.

Of particular interest is the heavy double portrait coin of Nero that the collector has decided is an 18th/19th (?) century French forgery, in spite of the fact that the late Serge Boutin sold it to him as genuine, and that RPC has recorded it as genuine in its first supplement.
