TROAS, Aioleion. Circa 330-280 BC. Æ (15.5mm, 4.15 g, 10h). Laureate head of female (Hera?) right / Thunderbolt; kerykeion below. Lazzarini,
Inizio p. 11; SNG Arikantürk 339–41 var. (grape bunch not kerykeion). Dark green patina, some roughness and cleaning marks. VF.
This issue is often erroneously attributed to Mytilene on Lesbos, based on older research that had been the basis of such an attribution in SNG Copenhagen and von Aulock. However, since L. Robert’s Etudes de numismatique grecque in 1951, periodic studies have convincingly reattributed this series to a city of Aioleion in Troas, which is corroborated by the appearance of three bronzes in the Arikantürk collection acquired in the region of ancient Adramyteion.
