ITALY, Venezia (Venice). Francesco Querini. d. 1563. Cast Æ Medal (35mm, 27.36 g, 12h). By Giovanni da Cavino (1500-1570). Bareheaded, bearded and draped bust of Querini right; traces of original legend, FRANC · QVIRINVS still visible / PERPETVA SOBOLES, She-wolf standing right, head left, suckling the Twins. Johnson & Martini 1194; Attwood 284; Pollard, Bargello, 770; Voltolina 441. Brown patina, a few scratches. VF.

Querini was a distinguished Venetian who was a senator, soldier, poet, orator and a procurator of S. Marco. The original medal bore his name, FRANC QVIRINVS on the obverse, erased slightly later so that it could be used to commemorate another individual (often Alessandro d’Medici who vaguely resembled Querini).
