SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, JULIA DOMNA, CARACALLA and GETA. 193-211 AD. Æ Limes Aureus (19mm, 3.51 gm). Struck circa 202 AD. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Septimius Severus right / Facing draped bust of Julia Domna; Caracalla on left facing right, laureate and draped; Geta on right facing left, bare headed, draped and cuirassed. RIC IV 181c; BMCRE 380 note; RSC 6. VF, dark brown patina with earthen encrustations.

From the Marc Melcher Collection.

RSC notes that "[it] would seem that these...are are either originals from dies used for gold, or false copies of gold made in silver." This example is an ancient cast, and is certainly the latter being from the Roman frontiers (or limes). Thus, it is doubly peculiar--it is like a fake of a fake.
