CILICIA, Seleucia ad Calycadnum. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ (31mm, 13.25 g, 6h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right; countermarks: annulet-in-∆ monogram within triangular incuse and K / Athena advancing right, brandishing spear and shield at anguipede Giant, who raises hands. For coin: SNG BN 1011; SNG Levante 764; for countermarks: Howgego 670 and 618. Dark green-brown patina with some light earthen highlights/deposits, minor roughness. VF.
The vast majority of this type have the annulet-in-∆ countermark, with a smaller percentage also having the additional K countermark. Both countermarks are almost always applied to the coin’s obverse.
