After reaching Derby during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart decided to turn back to Scotland in what is sometimes called “Black Friday.” On the way, the town of Carlisle was recaptured by the British Army. Not long after returning to Scotland, they were defeated at the Battle of Culloden, ending the rebellion.
