MARK ANTONY and OCTAVIAN. 39 BC. AR Denarius (3.82 gm). Military mint travelling with Octavian in Gaul. Bare head of Octavian right / ANTONINVS IMP, winged caduceus. Crawford 529/2a; CRI 302; Sydenham 1327a; RSC 6 (Augustus). Toned VF, overstruck on uncertain type. ($600)
From the Tony Hardy Collection.
This issue was struck by Octavian, but gives prominence to Antony's name. Sear speculates that Octavian may have paid Antony this unusual honor because Octavian was in territory that had recently been under the firm control of Antony.
