OCTAVIAN. Circa 29-27 BC. AR Denarius (3.48 gm). Italian mint. Bare head right / Triumphal arch surmounted with triumphal quadriga. RIC I 267; CRI 422; RSC 123. Lightly toned, nice VF. ($500)
From the Tony Hardy Collection.
The reverse depicts the triumphal arch awarded to Octavian in 29 BC on the occasion of the victory over Cleopatra at Actium. Like the later arch which commemorated his recovery of the Roman standards from the Parthians, this arch stood in close proximity to the Temple of Divus Julius at the southern entrance to the Roman Forum.
