GERMANY, Silesia, Liegnitz-Brieg. George, Ludwig, and Christian. 1639-1663. AV Ducat (3.34 gm). Dated 1657. Half length busts of the three brothers / Complex garnished coat-of-arms. Friedberg 3200; KM 3200. VF, edge mount, polished fields. ($200)

From the Charles E. Weber Collection.

The duchies of Liegnitz and Brieg were sometimes joined, sometimes separate, depending on the relations between the innumerable Silesian nobles. They separated in 1241, joined in 1338, split again in 1348, re-united in 1420, broke apart again in 1495, reconciled in 1596, dissolved their union in 1602, and finally came together for the last time in 1664, only to be absorbed by Austria in 1675 and then claimed by Frederick the Great for Prussia in 1740.
