CELTIC ENGLAND. Gold Neck Torc. Circa 1200-650 BC. Diameter 155mm, maximum thickness 3mm, weight 36.10 gm. Plain gold wire neck torc, tapering towards the terminals, one of which ends in a hook, the other lacking, but was probably a loop. A few scuffs and minor cracks, but otherwise in fine condition, with good spring to the gold. ($3000)
This torc was found by metal detectorists in a field near Cantley, Yorkshire on 30 October, 2001. The find was reported to the Coroner and after examination by the British Museum was declared Treasure Trove and returned to the finders. Analysis by the British Museum reports a gold fineness of 81% and suggests a dating sometime in the Middle Bronze Age. A highly important treasure find from early England.
