SICILY, Katana. Circa 410 BC. AR Litra (0.84 gm). Head of Silenos left, wearing ivy wreath / KATAN-[AIWN], winged thunderbolt flanked by shields(?). SNG ANS 1266; SNG Lloyd 981; SNG Copenhagen 182; SNG Fitzwilliam 964; Rizzo pl. XIV, 18. Toned EF, some minor striking weakness on the obverse. ($1500)

The dies used for this issue are known to be among the finest classical style used in Sicilian numismatics. Understandably, it is even speculated that the engraver of these dies was none other than the master engraver Euainetos. The lifelike features of Silenos and the elegant form of the thunderbolt are certainly reminiscent of some of his work in the Syracusan series.
