MYSIA, Kyzikos (?). Circa 600-550 BC. EL 1/24 Stater (0.69 gm). Head of boar with prominent tusks left / Incuse punch, with two pyramidal inclusions. Von Fritze I -; Greenwell -; SNG France -; BMC Mysia -; SNG Copenhagen -; Boston MFA -; SNG von Aulock -; Rosen -. EF. ($750)

The tentative attribution to early Kyzikos is based on the use of the Phokaic weight standard used in the extensive electrum trade coinage of that city, and the stylistic similarities to the heads of the tunny fish of the period with their characteristic protuberant pellet eyes (cf. Rosen 414). This coin would be the prototype for the prolific later silver fractions of Kyzikos, with boar forepart. Presumably, a better centered specimen would reveal a tunny fish behind the boar's head.
