SASANIAN KINGS of PERSIA. Khosrau II. 591-628 AD. AR Drachm (4.01 gm). Uncertain mint. Dated year 21 or 23 (611 or 613 AD). "Khosrau, the king of kings, may (he) strengthen (or prosper)" in Pahlavi, crowned and cuirassed facing bust, ribbons over shoulders, stars-in-crescents flanking crown, monogram to left / "Iran has strengthened (or prospered)" to right in Pahlavi, facing bust of Anahit in flame nimbus, regnal year to left. Göbl IV/5; Paruck 463 var. (year); Alram 920; MACW -; De Morgan pg. 724, 213. Toned, near EF. [See color enlargement on plate 10] ($3000)

Ex Peus 349 (30 October 1996), lot 257.

Due to ambiguous engraving, the regnal year on this drachm has charateristics of both 21 and 23, such that a definite reading is uncertain. If the date is 21, however, this would be the second recorded drachm of this type with this date (for the other, see M. Malek, "The Sasanian King Khusrau II (AD 590/1-628) and Anahita" in Name-ye Iran-e Bastan, vol. 2, no. 1 (2002), pg. 37, 38).
