LUCIUS VERUS. 161-169 AD. Æ Sestertius (25.90 gm). Struck 161 AD. IMP CAES L AVREL VERVS AVG, bare head right, wearing aegis, seen from behind / CONCORD AVGVSTOR TR P, COS II in exergue, S C across field, Marcus Aurelius standing right, clasping hands with Lucius Verus standing left. RIC III 1283 var. (Marcus; slight drapery on left shoulder); MIR 18, 16-16/11 (same obverse die); Banti 18 var. (slight drapery on left shoulder); BMCRE 857 var. (Marcus; same); Cohen 27 var. (same). Good VF, beautiful green patina and an oversized flan. Attractive portrait and an extremely rare bust variety. [See color enlargement on plate 16] ($4000)

This is the second, and probably the finest, known example of this coin. It is the only one not in a public collection; the other is in the American Numismatic Society.
