George IV. 1820-1830. AV Sovereign (7.94 gm). Dated 1828. GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA, 1828, laureate head left / BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF:, crowned coat-of-arms on scroll. Marsh 13; SCBC 3801; Friedberg 377b; KM 696. VF. One of the rarest dates of Engish sovereigns, missing from most collections. [See color enlargement on plate 22] ($3000)

During most of the year 1828 the Royal Mint struck sovereigns using old 1827 dated dies. It was only in December that the new 1828 dies were put into production, and only 386,182 pieces were struck. Some references suggest fewer than 10 specimens from that limited production run have survived.
