The people of Flanders were sympathic towards Edward III and his claim to the French throne. Louis de Nevers, count of Flanders joined with Edward upon his invasion of France. When the French met the English army at Crécy in 1346, the English longbowmen were responsible for a decisive victory. Louis de Nevers, however, was one of the casualties on the English side, and later became known as Louis of Crécy.
