ALEXIUS I. 1081-1118. AR Histamenon Nomisma (27mm, 4.31 gm). Struck 1081/1082. Thessalonica mint. Nimbate bust of Christ / Nimbate and armored figure of St. Demetrius, standing right, presenting labarum to Alexius, standing facing, wearing crown and loros. DOC IV 4 var. (legend); SB 1904. Good VF, well struck with much of the legend clearly visible. Rare, with no price listed in SB.

According to DOC, this issue was the very brief first coinage of the Thessalonica mint, which Alexius opened as he passed through in September 1081 on his way to battle with the Normans. This type was discontinued in 1082, when a significant debasement of the coinage occurred.
