CELTIC, Gaul. Nervii. Circa 115-100 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.88 gm). Crossed Lines with Rider Type. Vertical line with diagonal lines at various angles / Celtic horse left; lyre and pellet below. D&T 94; cf. De la Tour 8697; Van Arsdell 37. Near VF, bold lines. ($300)
From the Prof. Peter Crossley-Holland Collection. This is usually catalogued as a ‘defaced die’ type. However, this is incorrect, because the obverse die was not a reworking of another die. The apparently random lines were deliberately and carefully cut as a new die, and do not obliterate a previous design.
