CELTIC, Gaul. Morini. Circa 58-50 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.45 gm). Uniface Tree Type. Plain obverse / Rooted tree with bar and small crescent each side, bent line and crescent and heart below. D&T 250; De la Tour -; Van Arsdell 69-3. Good VF, sharply struck in golden gold with clear tree. ($300)
From the Richard Wilson Collection. If the central motif is intended to be a rooted tree, as it would appear to be, then it may either represent a Celtic version of the ‘tree of life’ or perhaps an oak tree, which was held to be sacred by the druids. The bent line may be a stream or stylized thunderbolt. See lot 20, below, for a similar type struck in Britain.
