CELTIC, Britain. Cantiaci. Circa 45-40 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.33 gm). Treelike Trophy Type. Plain obverse / Stylized tree motif with latticed rectangles, large ringed-pellets above, bent line and small ringed-pellets below. Hobbs -; Van Arsdell -; SCBC -; SCBI 1, 29. Good VF, rose gold, neat round flan, centrally struck. Very rare. ($400)

Ex NumCirc (October 1997), no. 4883.

A more elaborate version of lot 5, struck in Britain rather than northern Gaul, slightly lighter in weight and with a higher copper content. It has been suggested that this design was adapted from a silver denarius of Julius Caesar, struck in Spain 46-45 BC, showing a trophy of Gallic arms between seated male and female captives (Crawford 468/1 and 468/2).
