CELTIC, Britain. Trinovantes. Circa 60-50 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.12 gm). Harlow Flyer Type. Vertical double line with pellets between, with crescent at base, ‘bear’s paws’ either side with ringed-pellet at end, horizontal wreath half with inward-facing leaves, half with beaded oval shape, below: two crescents forming eyes / Long-legged horse right with beaded mane, pellet and winged motif above, cogwheel below. Hobbs -; Van Arsdell -; "Coin Register,"
BNJ 1992; SCBC 169. CCI 95.3464. Thin flan with three tiny holes, otherwise good VF, sharply struck in toned, golden gold, well ornamented, bold horse. Extremely rare; only seven others recorded. ($500)
Ex Mike Vosper, August 1995. Found at Heybridge, Essex. All the provenanced coins have come from Essex, and so an attribution to the Trinovantes seems most likely. The obverse is a highly stylized variation of the British Qc quarter, while the reverse has a peculiar feature above the horse which looks like a whalespout, but is probably two back to back wings.
