CELTIC, Britain. Catuvellauni & Trinovantes. Cunobelin. Circa 10-41 AD. AV Quarter Stater (1.38 gm). Plastic Type. Ear of corn without central stalk, CA to left, [MV] to right / ‘Plastic’-style Celtic horse galloping right, branch above, [CVN] below. Hobbs 1846-48; Van Arsdell 2015; SCBC 294. VF, light rose gold, sharply struck with bold horse. ($400)
From the Matthew Rich Collection. Ex Mike Vosper, January 1999.The whiskered ear of wheat or barley quickly became the ‘trademark’ on all the gold coins of Cunobelin and remained so throughout his long reign. The branch above the horse is clearly linked to the branch below the horse on certain coins of Dubnovellaunos (see lot 28, above).
