CELTIC, Britain. Catuvellauni & Trinovantes. Cunobelin. Circa 10-41 AD. AV Quarter Stater (1.31 gm). Cam Cvn Type. Ear of corn without central stalk, [C]AM to left, CV[N] to right / Celtic horse prancing, branch above, CV[N] below. Hobbs 1845; Van Arsdell 2017; SCBC 295. Near VF, toned rose gold. Extremely rare. ($400)
From the Richard Wilson Collection. This is one of the rarest of the many different types of Cunobelin gold quarter staters. Why does CVN appear on both sides? Was Cunobelin keen to associate his name with the name of his capital? It would seem so. This same obverse type (CAM-CVN) was used by a son(?) of Cunobelin who signed himself A or AGR.
