CELTIC, Britain. Corieltauvi. Circa 40-10 BC. AV Stater (5.47 gm). South Ferriby Snakes Type. Wreath motif with brick-like leaves facing inwards / Lunate Celtic horse left, hidden ‘sad’ face above, eight pointed star below. Hobbs 3148-78; Van Arsdell 811; SCBC 390. Good VF, bright coppery gold, sharply struck. ($500)
What Van Arsdell calls an ‘anchor’ on South Ferriby staters may originally have been intended as a stylized bucranium. On many specimens it also seems to be a hidden face.
